We’ve heard that The Witcher season 2 is already in production, but some exciting roles have yet to be filled. Now we’ve had confirmation of one of the biggest roles being filled, Vesemir. The actor portraying the father figure for Geralt of Rivia will be no other than Kim Bodnia. The announcement was made by the series’s showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich.
Witchers were made to kill monsters
Hissrich explained that, “I have admired his unique talents in shows like Killing Eve and The Bridge and cannot wait for him to bring strength, tenacity, and warmth to the character of Vesemir, who is such an integral part of our upcoming season.”
Vesemir is a survivor of The Massacre at Kaer Morhen. This event saw nearly every witcher exterminated. Now Vesemir sees the survivors of his kind as an endangered people that he must protect. He believes that the community of witchers can find glory in the path of slaying monsters.
Bodnia is probably best-known for his recent work on the spy thriller series Killing Eve, in which he plays Konstantin Vasiliev. Last year the actor was nominated for a BAFTA as best supporting actor. If you watched any episode of Killing Eve with him in it, then you’ll know why.
Prior to this announcement there was a lot of buzz about Mark Hamill playing the role of Vesemir. In January 2020, Hissrich had said, “Mark has always been of interest to me and interest to the project.” While bringing together the Witcher and Star Wars fan bases would have stirred up even more interest in the series, clearly Bodnia was a better fit. It’s possible that Hamill simply didn’t have the availability to play Vesemir, or that in the end he was deemed too well known to play the character. The thought of fans referring to Vesemir as Luke Skywalker makes me a little mad, as I imagine it would make any Witcher fan feel.
The Witcher season 2 is planned to premiere sometime in 2021. More cast members have also been confirmed via Twitter, which you can see below.
