Today, WitcherCon occurred, a big digital celebration of all things involving The Witcher at CD Projekt Red and Netflix alike. There were various interviews and discussions, but most people were really only hoping for a trailer and release date for The Witcher season 2 — and we got both. Netflix has dropped the season 2 teaser trailer for The Witcher and announced a December 17, 2021 release date.
The trailer begins with Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill) taking Princess Ciri (Freya Allan) to Kaer Morhen for her protection, and it is wild how much Kaer Morhen looks just like it did in The Witcher 3. Meanwhile, Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) is almost completely absent from the trailer, keeping the emphasis pretty squarely on Ciri and how Geralt protects and guides her. It seems that a significant aspect of season 2 may be Ciri honing her powers, while surviving any number of unforeseen dangers.
The first season of The Witcher was a critical and commercial success for Netflix, being one of the most in-demand streaming series in the world upon its release. All the quality from the first season seems present in the teaser trailer for The Witcher season 2, so there’s nothing to worry about now except how we’ll survive the long wait for that December release date.
