The World Ends with You: The Animation premieres tomorrow, but there’s been a last-minute change to the anime’s opening theme following the arrest of the band ALI’s drummer Kahadio. The TWEWY anime’s official website states that the decision to change the opening theme came from Sony Music Labels.
The opening song’s title is “Teenage City Riot” by ALI (Alien Liberty International), which we first heard in a trailer for The World Ends with You: The Animation back in November. We also got to check out an alternate rap version, titled “Teenage City Riot feat. R-Shiteri,” featuring the Osaka-based rapper Creepy Nuts. However, following the arrest of Kahadio (real name is Kadio Shirai), Square Enix has deleted all trailers that included Teenage City Riot, including the alternate rap version.
Kahadio was arrested earlier today in Japan, but Sony Music confirmed that it would not affect the anime’s broadcast. While the reason behind the ALI drummer’s arrest remains unknown, we’ve seen similar incidents occur in the past. Sega halted sales of the Yakuza spinoff, Judgment, following the arrest of voice actor Pierre Taki for suspicion of cocaine use. Furthermore, Taki was the Japanese voice for Olaf from Frozen, so not only did they remove all Frozen DVDs and Blu-rays from shops, but Square Enix also went as far as updating Olaf’s voice in Kingdom Hearts III.
The World Ends with You The Animation will debut on April 9, 2021. It will be available to watch worldwide with English subtitles on Funimation and MBS and TBS and other television networks in Japan. In case you missed it, Square Enix will share news on NEO: The World Ends with You on April 9 at 3:00 p.m. JST (2:00 a.m. ET).
