Since its initial release in 2011, Skyrim has received numerous re-releases, several to be exact as of 2017. In a recent interview with Games Industry, Bethesda’s Studio Director, Todd Howard gave some advice to those complaining about the games numerous re-releases. “Even now, the amount of people who play Skyrim seven years later; millions of people every month are playing that game. That’s why we keep releasing it. If you want us to stop releasing it, stop buying it.,” said Howard.

Since 2014, more than 20 million copies of the game have been sold and it was not until 2017 when it lost its ranking as Bethesda’s top-selling title to Fallout 4. In 2018, it still ranks among the highest selling games on Steam, holding a bronze ranking in sales. But the fact it has over 50,000 simultaneous players this year is a big reason Bethesda keeps re-releasing the seven-year-old game, plus its ability to retain such a high number of players is impressive along with its plethora of awards.

But could the game be part of the next console generation? While its strong sales may hint at it becoming a possibility, Bethesda did release the first teaser for The Elder Scrolls VI at E3 2018 back in June. So we will have to wait and see if Skyrim somehow makes the leap into the next generation of gaming.
