Out of nowhere, Signal Studios has announced that Toy Soldiers is making a return. The tower defense series debuted in 2010 on Xbox Live Arcade, a digital platform on Xbox 360 that housed a selection of smaller games. A sequel, Cold War, followed up in 2011, and now both originals are getting Switch remasters, alongside a new multiplatform entry, Toy Soldiers 2: Finest Hour.
The original’s HD remaster will feature new content, options, and difficulty levels alongside a graphical overhaul, improved controls, and integrated DLC. It’s due out in fall 2020 according to the official website, though other places state spring 2020 (which, it must be noted, won’t last much longer). Toy Soldiers: Cold War HD, meanwhile, is simply “coming soon.”
Where the HD remasters are only coming to Switch, Toy Soldiers 2: Finest Hour will launch on PC and at least all current consoles in 2021. The sequel will feature “physics-based obstacles, deformable terrain, fluid placement, dynamic pathing, and responsive AI.” Although the upcoming sequel moves to World War II, it looks to retain what players enjoyed about the first two games.
Developer Signal Studios says, “Everything we loved about Toy Soldiers and Toy Soldiers Cold War is back and better than ever in TS2 including improved mp, co-op, overcharge, deadly barrages, competitive mini-games, crazy new survival modes, and much more.” A short video clip is available on their website, teasing what we can expect from the upcoming sequel.
