For a while now, Square Enix has been drop-feeding Trials of Mana trailers to showcase all the returning protagonists and whatnot, and that’s fine. But it all gets to feel like “samey” PR stuff, and people tune out. By comparison, this new Trials of Mana gameplay trailer really delivers the goods, being almost four minutes long and providing a nice overview of the battle system, class changes, and new abilities. All in all, it truly feels like a modernization of the original SNES / Super Famicom action RPG, and it exhibits a level of polish that was lacking in the Secret of Mana remake on PlayStation 4, PS Vita, and PC.
As the gameplay trailer illustrates, you start the game by forming a team of three out of six options, and the story will change to cater to these characters’ goals. Likewise, different characters excel at different things, though you can customize them to some extent with gear and as they level up. New “chain abilities” can be shared with the team, and certain abilities will be uniquely available during day or nighttime.
It really looks like Trials of Mana is on track at Square Enix, and I’m sure that, for a few ardent ultra-weebs, this is the most exciting RPG remake that the company has in development. I mean, what else even is there?
Trials of Mana will release on April 24 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Steam. Those who purchase the game by May 21 will receive “a Rabite Adornment DLC, allowing players to gain more EXP after battles up to level 10.”
