Local retail store Asda, in the UK, which has about 555 outlets has frozen all stock on Wii U consoles, games and accessories, while yet eight products remain on Asda’s Direct website.  The eight remaining products are some that released during Wii U’s launch in November 2012.

Asda’s store in Birmingham, the largest Asda outlet in the UK, stated to CVG that it couldn\’t find any copies of the Wii U hot new seller Pikmin 3 on its shelves or Wii U consoles in stock.  Meanwhile, the customer service personnel for Asda’s Direct website also told CVG that they couldn\’t locate any in stock either on the website.

Why Asda has decided to stop selling Wii U consoles, games and accessories at their outlets is strange and what is even more baffling is they they stopped carrying the 3DS, games and accessories on their Asda direct website.  The biggest riddle is why would they take something like the 3DS which has outsold more units than the Xbox 360 and PS3 across the UK and the U.S. and remove it both online and in physical retail stores.

Nintendo, of course, issued a response to Asda’s decision explaining once again as Satoru Iwata phrased it, \”Software sells hardware\” but who knows if that idea will stick.

\”Nintendo UK does not comment on specific business practices with individual retailers.  …with titles such as Wonderful 101, The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD and Super Mario 3D World already announced for this year as well as the recently released Pikmin 3 and New Super Luigi U having reached number 2 and number 6 in this week’s chart respectively, we are looking forward to the year ahead on Wii U,\” stated Nintendo UK.

According to a recent updated statement, Asda has said they they will stock Wii U games on their Asda Direct website on a title by title \”merit\” basis.  They also said they will continue to support Nintendo as a format holder partner.

What are your thoughts on this updated statement? Has Asda totally jumped ship like many third-party developers and stabbed Nintendo in the back while yet saying they are still \”loyal\”? Leave your comments below.

*Update: Yes, folks, that’s right–another update.  As previously reported there were 555 stores total selling the Wii U, games and accessories.  A new source says that only 100 stores officially were carrying the console, games and accessories.  Apparently the Wii U has been scarce on Asda Direct because of limited hardware going out of stock.  As for the 3DS, it has been selling out due to recent price promotions on the site.  Asda has confirmed that Wii U games can be purchased on the Asda Direct website through their click and collect service and then picked up at one of the local stores.
