Under the Jolly Roger is an open-world action RPG coming to Nintendo Switch next month. Announced today alongside a trailer, the game looks like it takes multiple pages from Rare’s Sea of Thieves. It’s more realistic visually, like Black Flag, but expect island-hopping and plenty of pirate exploring across the game’s “three vast worlds.” Under the Jolly Roger releases this September.
The official trailer dropped today and shows off lots of customizable vessels out at sea. It’s unclear whether multiplayer will be supported, but if it isn’t, we’re expecting a more substantial campaign than in the likes of Sea of Thieves. Hopefully some of that exploration and the unpredictable nature of Rare’s pirate adventure can be retained though. There’s also some hand-to-hand combat shown on foot, alongside ships fighting a huge Kraken.
Developer HeroCraft, known for its work on Warhammer 40,000: Space Wolf, discussed the game’s key features. The team says that to obtain the most antique treasures, players must take part in “multi-level quests.” Hopefully this means there are some relatively deep single-player missions. The game looks like some sort of conversion of Tempest, as a lot of the key art is shared. Here are some more features:
- Seamless open world you can sail in real-time.
- Upgrade and decorate your ship to strike fear upon your enemies.
- Become a merchant, earn your fortune by trading with colonies.
- Plunder galleons, sink warships and destroy forts.
- Face the creatures of the deep! Giant sea monsters are waiting for you.
Under the Jolly Roger launches on Switch in September, with no exact date revealed just yet. A 3-week preorder discount will be available for €14.39 in Europe and $15.99 in the U.S.
