Last year, the UTGP was themed around Marvel. Winners of the competition and the shirts they made can still be purchased at Uniqlo’s website (at sale prices too, to make room for this year’s winners). More notably, UTGP 2017 was themed after Nintendo. Uniqlo reported over 17,000 submissions were entered for the year, and the competition’s top three winners created shirts for Super Mario Bros., Splatoon, and The Legend of Zelda. The Nintendo line of shirts are no longer available, but eBay has more than a few.
Artists and designers worldwide are encouraged to submit their best t-shirt designs starting on Oct. 23, all the way through Feb. 12, 2019. Judges of the competition include Pokémon Company President Tsunekazu, Game Freak designer Ken Sugimori, and UT Creative Designer NIGO. Uniqlo specifically caters to brighter, colorful designs and attractive all-over/large prints, so designers may have luck following the company’s existing shirt styles when submitting.
