Valkyria Chronicles coming to Nintendo Switch Online Game Trial next month in Japan

Nintendo Switch Online subscribers in Japan are in for a treat with Valkyria Chronicles confirmed as the next Game Trial. The military-themed strategy RPG by Sega will be available to play for a week, starting at noon on July 5 to 5:59 p.m. (JST) on July 11.

Long prior to this Nintendo Switch Online Game Trial, Sega originally released the game for PlayStation 3 in April 2008. The setting is a fictional continent called Europa (loosely based on Europe) during World War II. The story follows Lieutenant Welkin Gunther and Squad 7 of the Gallian Militia, who fight to repel the invasion from the East Europan Imperial Alliance.

Sega’s proprietary CANVAS game engine gives Valkyria Chronicles a unique graphical style based on watercolor paintings. As for gameplay, it features a battle system called BLiTZ (Battle of Live Tactical Zones) that combines turn-based systems with real time action.

Check out how it plays in a launch trailer for Valkyria Chronicles below:

It’s worth noting that this version of Valkyria Chronicles isn’t the same as the 2016 remaster for PlayStation 4. Sega made the remaster to run at 1080p and 60 FPS for PS4. However, the Switch version includes all previously released DLC. Subscribers will also get the option to purchase Valkyria Chronicles at a 33% discount for 1,466 yen (~$13.23) during the Game Trial period.

Valkyria Chronicles is immediately available for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC. Keep in mind that the Valkyria Chronicles Game Trial announcement is only for Japan so far, so we’ll have to wait and see what the West gets. Nintendo Switch Online subscribers in Japan got Good Job! in April, while Europe got Descenders, so other regions will likely get something that isn’t Valkyria Chronicles.
