E3 is just around the corner, and we’re pumped for all the new game reveals. Nintendo’s lineup remains a mystery, but if you’re like me, you’re hoping to see Samus! It looks like Walmart Canada is expecting exactly that, based on a recent listing. They’re currently taking preorders for a new Metroid on Nintendo Switch. What’s going on here?
New Metroid on Nintendo Switch?
First of all, it should be noted that this is an extremely generic product listing. There is no title, no box art, a placeholder release date of December 31, and a brief description that reads “New Release Game coming soon.” Aside from this being a new Metroid on Nintendo Switch, we know nothing. In other words, it’s possible that this is just a placeholder for the already announced Metroid Prime 4. However, we’ve also heard steady rumblings about a 2D game on the way.
Then there’s the question of just how seriously we should take a Walmart listing. Retailers have been known to put up generic placeholders without having any real information. A new Metroid on Nintendo Switch is a fairly safe bet for E3, especially since Prime 4 was already revealed. On the other hand, Walmart infamously leaked numerous games ahead of E3 2018. So there is precedent for something like this.
Overall, it’s probably best to temper your expectations… but I’d give an arm and a leg for a classic 2D Metroid that re-captures the magic of Super.
