Wii U owners, you\’ll have to wait on Watch Dogs just a bit longer.
Ubisoft’s official announcement of the Watch Dogs release date includes all the major platforms you\’d expect – Xbox 360, Xbox One, Playstation 3, Playstation 4, and PC – but it seems like Wii U is being left off the list. The initial news came from a Watch Dogs trailer that hinted at the May 27th release date.
When Ubisoft later confirmed that the date was official, they also confirmed that the Wii U version will be arriving \”sometime later.\”
This follows Ubisoft’s move to send Watch Dogs to a spring 2014 release in the first place. The game was originally scheduled to launch in October 2013.
Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemott, however, has already given a statement of the delay of the official Wii U release. This may line up Watch Dogs Wii U for a late 2014 release that benefits from added development time, but could be hindered by a stronger launch lineup for the Wii U during that time in general. Games like Bayonetta 2, Hyrule Warriors, and even Smash Bros. could hurt Watch Dogs\’ sales.
Due to this delay, the Wii U version will likely perform worse than its counterparts. The Wii U’s lower install base will exasperate this problem.
Still, the game will be as polished and primed for play as ever. Hopefully Ubisoft reveals more about the Wii U version to help generate sales and perk up interest. By the time Watch Dogs rolls out on Wii U, the game will have already be long and gone from the headlines (until awards reason begins again). However, if the delay proves fruitful for the Wii U version in terms of quality, it could be enough to garner a decent response from buyers.
Watch Dogs has now become yet another Ubisoft game to be delayed on Wii U and one of the many other third-party titles that have found their Nintendo versions pushed back. What do you think about the Watch Dogs Wii U delay?
