Have you noticed those new PokéStops and Gyms around in Pokémon GO? I sure have. They’ve made life a little easier when it comes to spinning that wheel and getting goodies. You can thank certain Wayfinders for that, as it’s been up to them to nominate and review all stops through the Wayfarer app. They also make sure that Stops and Gyms don’t appear in dangerous, private, or school-based locations. It started rolling out in October, and it had been going pretty well in the two-and-a-half months up to the wider launch on Dec. 26. Unfortunately, Niantic has had to discontinue the program for the time being.
Apparently the Wayfarer app had been putting strain on the servers that keep Pokémon GO running (and maybe also Harry Potter: Wizards Unite and Ingress, if they’re shared?). It took them less than a day to halt the program.
Trainers, due to overwhelming response, we are disabling PokéStop and Gym contributions to avoid stability issues. We'll provide an update when it's available again, thanks for your understanding. https://t.co/8ssOKcnE83

Considering the program was only available to players at level 40, this is an impressive achievement. Granted, things will never reach the initial level of lag when the game first released. But with Pokémon GO being one of the most popular mobile apps of all time, any disruption could be a problem. Hopefully they can figure out a way of smoothing things over and relaunch it soon. The Wayfarer program was a great incentive for players to reach the top level and a better reason to keep playing once they got there.
Did you take part in the Niantic Wayfarer program? What was your experience like? Let us know!
