Rooster Teeth Productions just kicked off RTX At Home, a digital replacement for their COVID-canceled convention. During a panel for the popular animated series RWBY, they teased an upcoming video game collaboration. Rooster Teeth will be teaming up with WayForward Technologies and Arc System Works to launch a RWBY game in 2021.

This upcoming video game (which is currently nameless) will be developed by WayForward, best known for Shantae, Mighty Switch Force, and River City Girls. Arc System Works has experience with the RWBY brand after including five of its characters in BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle. They’ll serve as the game’s publisher, bringing it to “consoles and PC” in 2021. No specific consoles were named, so it’s unclear if Switch is a target platform. However, both Arc System Works and WayForward have strong representation on Nintendo’s console.

The world of RWBY

No gameplay was revealed, but we did get a few details about the setting and gameplay. The game will feature an original story set during “a perfect window” in Volume 7. This past volume kicks off with the protagonists reaching the Kingdom of Atlas and training under General Ironwood. An unspecified number of weeks go by throughout the course of the volume, so there’s plenty of room for the game to take place.

As for gameplay, we only got one small detail. While discussing the semblance (a unique power most RWBY characters possess) of General Ironwood, writer Miles Luna said we might see it in the WayForward game. Unsurprisingly, it seems that semblances will be a part of the gameplay. Beyond that, we can only speculate. It could be a platformer, like Shantae, or Arc System Works’ experience with 2D fighters could come into play.

Update: WayForward has shared a small blurb on their website confirming the upcoming game and adding some detail. Specifically, they’ve revealed that the game’s protagonists will be Team RWBY: Ruby Rose, Weiss Schnee, Blake Belladonna, and Yang Xiao Long. These characters will “use their trademark weapons and abilities to deliver the stylish action” in the game, but a genre is not specified.
