Indie developer Vertex Pop is known for bright, pastel-fueled games full of gorgeous artwork like Graceful Explosion Machine and Super Crush KO. The former is a minimalist side-scrolling shoot ’em up full of deadly geometric enemies, while the latter is a comic book-style action platformer about saving your kidnapped kitten. Before either of those breakout hits, though, the Toronto-based game development studio made their name with a modest hit titled We Are Doomed. Now, just a bit over five years since the game originally came out on PC, the colorful debut title from Vertex Pop is arriving on PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and Nintendo Switch.
We Are Doomed shares some DNA with Graceful Explosion Machine, being a geometric game about shooting your way through hordes of, uh, shapes. We Are Doomed skews closer to Geometry Wars than Gradius, though, playing out as a top-down twin-stick shooter. You’ve got a standard attack beam that can deal with foes moderately well, but score enough points and you can charge the SUPERBEAM, a massive attack that destroys everything in its path. You can bust out the SUPERBEAM in Waves Mode against 30 sets of varied enemy armies, or even in an Endless Mode with no end in sight.
We Are Doomed is available now on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and PC.
