Unveiled today at Microsoft’s extraordinarily boring X019 event, West of Dead is a new twin-stick shooter from publisher Raw Fury and developer Upstream Arcade. You play as freshly dead William Mason, an amnesiac who must “descend into the grim and gritty world of Purgatory” in order to get answers. In classic “The story doesn’t really matter” fashion, Mason’s only memory is of a mysterious figure in black. However, spicing things up a bit is the fact that Ron Perlman voices the character.
The wild west environments are procedurally generated, which is terrific if you’re into high replayability and an instant no-buy if you prefer handcrafted environments. West of Dead‘s art is highly attractive and stylized though, reminding me of XIII but with a darker, Mike Mignola edge. Take a look.
The damage numbers that pop up during battle suggest there are at least some light RPG elements, but the press release makes no mention of such things. It would be nice if Upstream Arcade can differentiate the game in some way beyond its gorgeous art style.
West of Dead will release for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Game Pass, and PC in 2020. Does the Raw Fury trailer make you go yee-haw, or should this dead man stay dead?
