Yoku's Island Express

The Metroidvania genre has been nearly mastered by indie devs. Hollow KnightAxiom Verge, and more wow players around the world with an entrancing effect nearly comparable to genre stalwarts like Super Metroid or Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. With upcoming sequels and plenty of classics already out, the Metroidvania genre is among the best indicators of just how strong indie development has become. Which indie Metroidvania title is your favorite?

Largely as a side effect of having a massive backlog, I haven’t gotten to some of the best indie Metroidvanias out there such as Hollow Knight, but I have had the chance to try and love a few. Yoku’s Island Express is one that I always love to spotlight. As a crossover between Metroidvania exploration and pinball, the game oozes with a sort of creativity and charm that you rarely see outside of the indie scene nowadays. It’s a lovely game with a relaxing soundtrack, lovely hand-drawn environments, and an exciting pinball adventure perfect for knocking away a couple of lazy summer afternoons. If you haven’t played Yoku’s Island Express, you should absolutely give it a shot.

What is your favorite indie Metroidvania title? What do you love so much about it? What are some that you are still needing to play? Any that you’re looking forward to? Sound off in the comments.
