2019 is more than halfway over, and so far, it has been a relatively quiet year for gaming. That said, we have still seen some standouts. A couple of games have really wowed everyone and will still be contenders for Game of the Year come December, like Resident Evil 2 and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. We’ve also had a few great indie games like Baba is You. There are a lot of potential contenders yet to release, like Control, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, and the upcoming Link’s Awakening remake.
However, my question for you today is not concerned with games yet to release. Instead, I want to focus on what has already come out. What is your 2019 game of the year is so far? For me, it is the Switch’s own Super Mario Maker 2, followed closely by Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled.
Super Mario Maker 2 is a fantastic title with limitless play potential. On the course-building end, the gameplay loop of constantly tweaking and playtesting a course has been the most satisfying experience I have had on the Switch in a while. Of course, there are also millions of levels that have been uploaded online to discover and play. There are tons of courses showcasing wacky ideas, mindbending puzzles, and pure platforming greatness. However, the game has not escaped controversies like the recent deletion of GrandPOOBear’s Kai-Zero G level. Matters like these may sour the game in the long-run.
Meanwhile, Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled amazed me with some of the best kart racing gameplay ever. Behind dozens of vibrant tracks and a wonderful single-player, it stands right up there with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as one of the best kart racers ever.
With games like Luigi’s Mansion 3 and Link’s Awakening still on the way, Super Mario Maker 2 very well may not be my game of the year when the curtains fall on 2019. But for now, it stands at the top. What about you? What is the best 2019 release you have played so far this year? Do you think anything yet to come out can beat it?
