Remaster Remake Ask the Audience

Remakes and remasters are currently in style! Activision recently revived Crash Bandicoot and Spyro (with largely positive results) and Capcom masterfully remade Resident Evil 2. Nintendo re-launches Link’s Awakening next month, and there’s also Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz HD and Trials of Mana, just to name a few. There have also been many fantastic remakes and remasters in the past, giving classics new life on modern hardware. With so many great games to choose from, what’s your all-time favorite?

The best remakes and remasters

There’s quite a few good choices, but most of my favorites come from Nintendo. Gold and Silver were incredible Pokémon games, but they definitely show their age now. Heart Gold and Soul Silver, remakes on DS, gave them a beautiful new look and added countless quality of life improvements. Most importantly (for me, at least), they modernized the battle system, bringing in mechanics from the fourth generation.

I also heavily enjoy Metroid: Zero Mission. The original game is far from user friendly (there’s not even a map!), and it’s easy to see why people get frustrated with it. Zero Mission unfortunately lost some of the open world design of its predecessor, but anyone with a knack for sequence breaking can still find quite a bit of freedom. Although fan-made, I was also incredibly impressed by AM2R.
