The Legend of Zelda is a special series, with several widely beloved games that shine for all sorts of different reasons. Spanning over three decades, several consoles, and many different styles of gameplay, the franchise’s many strong points reflect some of the very best experiences across the entire medium. What is your favorite The Legend of Zelda game? What do you love about it?
For me, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker checks all of the right boxes. The gorgeous art style, grand soundtrack, an enjoyable story and atmosphere, and refined gameplay all make The Wind Waker one of my favorite games of all time. I can’t speak to its many, many strengths enough, but the game is full of delights ranging from simple to magnificent. Peaceful, calming sailing adventures, a wondrous sense of discovery, and puzzling, engaging dungeons to sink your teeth into mean that The Wind Waker excels in nearly every aspect of its design.
As great as The Wind Waker is, a few games do manage to come close. Majora’s Mask wowed me with its time mechanic, its eerie world, and its unsetting atmosphere. Breath of the Wild, meanwhile, knocked an entirely new interpretation of the series out of the park. What is your favorite game in the The Legend of Zelda series? Why? What comes close?
