Satoru Iwata, CEO and president of Nintendo, asked Wonderful 101 director and developers during an Iwata Asks episode, where exactly the hero’s back story would come into play.  Game director Hideki Kamiya said that the original idea was to have a heroic cast of famous Nintendo characters.  Kamiya expounded more on the idea and how the Platinum CEO was involved.

\”It started out with an order from Tesuya Minami saying \’Think up a plan to bring together world famous Nintendo characters at its center, appearing all in one game,\” Kamiya said.

What is really fascinating is the fact that something along those lines had already been done with Super Smash Bros. Brawl when all of the famous Nintendo characters and some cameos from other games came in as one \”unified\” heroic force to take down The SubSpace Emissary and its leader Taboo.  Even though it didn\’t seem like every single hero was on the screen at once interacting or in all in a line up like at the beginning of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Kamiya said they wanted to transcend that.

When the idea was originally proposed to Nintendo, producer Hitoshi Yamagama said it was impossible to do that type of project and so the idea got thrown on the back burner.  Once the idea was picked up again, a proposal was made of making it similar to a Viewtiful Joe style game with dark superheroes in \”US comic books\”.  Any hero’s that were seen as being \”too dark\” were fine tuned to make the game more suitable for a broad age range.

The Unite Morph idea where the heroes unite to make a fist, whip, gun, and sword were introduced later as well as the Multi-Unite Morph where the hero’s can perform multiple transformations in a chain like manner to deliver heavy damage.  It was the Multi-Unite Morph that was added back in May, behind Platinum producer Atsushi Inaba’s back.

\”I found out about it through a different channel after the fact, so I flipped.  I hadn\’t been angery like that in awhile.  I was like, \’How could you do that now?!\’ \” said Inaba.

There was also a hero based on Director Kamiya himself which is is discussed in the same Iwata Asks episode.  You can find out more about that in an another article we covered here on Nintendo Enthusiast.
