Oct. 8 is finally here and with it comes the new game in the Yooka-Laylee series, Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair. To celebrate, developer Playtonic has dropped a launch trailer to hype us up for the Donkey Kong Country-style platformer. Check it out!
The game stars the chameleon and bat duo as they run, jump, and do a whole bunch of flashy moves through Capital B’s eponymous impossible lair. There’s also an overworld map that can be altered by solving puzzles.
The launch trailer also shows off a few of its many, many tonics, which alter the way the game looks. We’ve got one that washes out the colors, one that gives the game 16-bit graphics, one that gives the game 64-bit graphics, one that makes the game cel-shaded, and many more.
Yooka-Laylee is here to stay
I didn’t need this launch trailer to sell me on the game as I’ve already preordered it. Still, it’s always fun to see new footage of a game I’ve been looking forward to. As you can see in our review, it’s a big hit with the staff, and for good reason. I’m thrilled that the team is taking a step back and exploring another genre for Yooka and Laylee to bounce around in.
At this point, it looks like Playtonic is stepping out of the shadow of the previous Rare games while still maintaining their spirit. It’s hard not to think of the series as a spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie, but they’re forging their own identity. I hope that one day both animal duos can sit side by side on my Switch shelf.
What do you think? Does the launch trailer have you excited for 2D platforming mayhem? Will you be collecting quills until the end of time? Let us know!
