The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD launches Friday, July 16, and so does the separate Zelda & Loftwing amiibo for the game — except, maybe not. Via IGN, Nintendo has explained that the Zelda & Loftwing amiibo is facing significant shipping delays, and many will not arrive until August.
A Nintendo of America statement provided the following: “The Zelda & Loftwing amiibo figure is currently impacted by unforeseen shipping delays. As a result, only a small portion of the Zelda & Loftwing will be available on its scheduled July 16 launch date. Additional shipments are delayed until August. We will ship additional amiibo to retailers as soon as they arrive.” No further clarification on the cause of the delay was provided, but Nintendo did state it will not affect the availability of any other amiibo. (Your Metroid Dread amiibo preorders are safe, it would seem.)
However, what makes the delay of the Zelda & Loftwing amiibo particularly sting is that it unlocks a pretty nice quality-of-life addition for playing Skyward Sword HD. It enables you to travel between the surface and the sky at will basically whenever you want, and it even works inside of dungeons. It had irked some to lock such a useful feature behind an amiibo, and now it seems likely that many who buy Skyward Sword HD at launch will finish the game before they ever even get their hands on the amiibo.
